Yes, I’m hijacking the food/craft blog with a “political” topic.

I would like to tell the few people who might pass by this blog that there is a dangerous misconception behind the push to ban live export of cattle from Australia to Indonesia.

People seem to think that if we refuse to sell live cattle to Indonesia, they will instead buy beef that has been humanely killed here in Australia.

WRONG.

Indonesia likes live cattle. If we won’t supply them, they will shop elsewhere. Argentina perhaps. There are a number of possibilities.

Stopping Australian live export is not the simple solution people would like it to be. Think about what you are really calling for before you jump on the bandwagon. “Not our cattle” isn’t a solution, it’s just turning away so we don’t have to look at the problem.
